Smart Glasses Are the New Exam Loophole Ofqual Can't Screen For

Smart devices, not phones, now drive most exam malpractice in England, and Ofqual admits wearable AI is outrunning invigilation.

Smart devices were involved in 2,225 malpractice cases during England's 2025 exam series, according to Ofqual data — 44.3 percent of all student malpractice incidents that year. Across GCSE, AS and A level exams, 1,125 cases resulted in a student losing an entire qualification, with nearly 2,000 more seeing marks deducted.

Ofqual's chief regulator has now gone further, using a June 2026 podcast and written evidence to Parliament to flag a specific new worry: smart glasses. Unlike a phone, which invigilators can spot in a blazer pocket or on a desk, AI-enabled glasses can display searched information directly in a student's field of view, with no obvious tell beyond the frames themselves. Hidden earpieces raise the same problem for audio.

This is a different threat to the one most schools have spent the past two years preparing for. Coursework AI misuse — pupils passing off generated essays as their own — happens at home, unsupervised, and gets caught (if at all) through writing-style anomalies or a Turnitin flag. Wearable-device cheating happens live, in the exam hall, under a supervising teacher's nose, and current invigilation training was not built to catch it.

Ofqual's own submission to the Commons Education Committee acknowledges that detected cases are "relatively low" against what school and college leaders suspect is a larger undisclosed problem — the same gap that has dogged AI-assisted coursework, now showing up in the room where exams are meant to be tamper-proof.

Why this lands differently than coursework AI

Most of the sector's AI-and-assessment effort in 2025 and 2026 went into essays, homework and non-exam assessment: rubric-based grading tools, Turnitin's writing-pattern tracking, and Ofqual's own advice note pushing exam boards toward more robust authentication of submitted work. That is a paper-trail problem — you can go back and interrogate a document.

A smart-glasses incident during a two-hour written paper leaves no document to interrogate. The exam board sees a finished script; whatever happened in the room happened and is gone. Ofqual's response so far has been procedural rather than technical: guidance for invigilators to look for unfamiliar eyewear and earpieces, and a warning that malpractice penalties apply regardless of the technology used. There is, as yet, no jamming, detection, or screening technology deployed at scale in English exam halls, and Ofqual's own consultation on regulating on-screen assessment flags cyber-attack and data-corruption risks for the digital exams due to arrive from 2026 — a separate reform track that will eventually put pupils in front of screens for some GCSEs, screens that will need to be locked down against exactly this kind of device.

For schools, the practical exposure sits with exam officers and invigilators, most of whom were trained on phone and Bluetooth-earpiece protocols, not on identifying AI hardware disguised as ordinary glasses. Consumer AI glasses from several manufacturers are now priced well within reach of a family saving for exam season, and none require a data connection that a phone-signal detector would catch.

What to do

  • Update invigilator briefings before the next exam series to explicitly cover smart glasses and in-ear devices, not just phones — Ofqual's malpractice guidance already treats them the same way, so the policy gap is training, not rules.
  • Add a visible declaration step: ask pupils to remove or hand in any eyewear with visible camera or lens hardware before papers are distributed, the same way phones are collected.
  • Brief exam officers that a malpractice case involving a wearable device carries the same penalty as a phone — loss of the whole qualification is on the table, and pupils should hear that plainly beforehand, not discover it after results day.
  • Flag the issue to your exam board's contact now; boards are still working out authentication protocols and school-level reports of near-misses feed directly into that work.

What to watch

Ofqual's advice note on AI-related malpractice and its consultation on regulating on-screen assessment are both live processes. Watch for whether either produces concrete detection guidance — a metal-detector-style wand, a declared no-wearables rule with spot checks, or simply reliance on invigilator vigilance — before the next major exam series begins in summer 2027.
